Tragedy Strikes: Four Lives Lost as Taxi Plunges into Malaba River


A devastating road accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Busia District, Uganda, resulting in the loss of four lives. A Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 889AM, was traveling from Kampala to Tororo when it plunged into the Malaba River at Amungura Bridge along the Busia-Tororo Road.

According to eyewitnesses, the taxi was speeding when it knocked a 75-year-old pedestrian, Okedi Raymond, before veering off the road and overturning into the river. The driver allegedly fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle and its occupants.

The Aftermath

Four passengers died on the spot, while 13 others sustained serious injuries. The injured were rushed to Tororo General Hospital for treatment. The deceased were identified as Onyango John, 31, Owor Peter, 26, Onyanga Michael, 42, and Opendi Wilson, 45.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the wreckage of the taxi towed to Busia Central Police Station for inspection. Regional police spokesperson Moses Mugwe urged drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
