Kampala, Uganda - In a surprise move, Eddy Mutwe, the embattled bodyguard of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine, was granted bail yesterday after spending two months in detention at Luzira Prison. The development has sparked widespread celebrations among supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and has been hailed as a rare victory amidst ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition.

Mutwe's arrest in May sparked widespread outrage, with many accusing the government of using the judiciary to silence dissenting voices. The NUP has been at the forefront of opposition to President Yoweri Museveni's government, which has been in power since 1986.

According to sources close to the NUP, Mutwe's release on bail is a significant morale booster for the party, which has faced numerous challenges in recent months. "This is a big win for us," said a senior NUP official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "It shows that our struggle for justice and democracy is not in vain."

The government has denied allegations of persecuting opposition members, insisting that it is committed to upholding the rule of law. However, critics argue that the judiciary has been compromised, and that many opposition members are being unfairly targeted.

As Mutwe walked out of prison yesterday, he was greeted by cheering supporters, who had gathered outside the prison gates. "I am grateful to God and to our supporters for standing with me during this difficult time," Mutwe said, his voice filled with emotion.

The development has also sparked renewed calls for the government to release other opposition members who are currently in detention. "We demand that the government release all political prisoners and respect the rights of all citizens," said a statement from the NUP.

As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, the opposition is gearing up for a fierce battle against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The NUP has vowed to continue its struggle for democracy and justice, despite the challenges it faces.

Mutwe's release on bail is a significant development in this context, and has given the opposition a much-needed boost. However, it remains to be seen whether this will mark a turning point in the ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition.
