Ntare School in Uganda was plunged into chaos on Sunday morning as students staged a violent strike, targeting four of their colleagues accused of engaging in homosexuality. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety and well-being of students at the school.
According to Headteacher Saul Rwamporo, the violence erupted when students turned on their peers, accusing them of homosexuality. Two of the targeted students managed to escape, but not without one of them suffering injuries. The school administration rescued two other students, while police were called in to restore order.
The violence also targeted the head prefect, who was accused of concealing the names of other students suspected of homosexuality. The angry mob smashed windows of several buildings, including the deputy headteacher's office and the staff room.
Rwamporo revealed that the school has been grappling with cases of homosexuality since 2023, and the problem appears to be escalating. The incident has raised questions about the school's ability to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
The police are investigating the incident, and it is unclear what measures will be taken to address the underlying issues. The school administration has promised to take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident serves as a reminder of the need for schools to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to create safe spaces for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
